$5 - $15 Restaurants

  • Chez Lucien – On Murray St. at Dalhousie.  This is one of our favorite restaurants.  The quaint atmosphere is nicely paired with great service.  The burgers are legendary (they have vegetarian and salmon options as well as beef).  If you like liver and onions this is also your place.  All of this can be nicely topped off with one of several options of Quebec micro-brew beers.

  • The Highlander Pub – 115 Rideau St.  This Scottish pub consistently serves good food at a reasonable price.  The burgers and steaks are worth a try.  If you like scotch, this place has an impressive selection.  The patio is right in the heart of the Market and is a fantastic place to enjoy a pint on a warm afternoon.

  • East African Restaurant  / Horn of Africa / Habesha – 364 / 376 / 574 Rideau St. All three restaurants serve interesting and spicy cuisine typically eaten by picking up food, with your hands, in a spongy bread called enjera.  The prices are reasonable and the experience is fun.  All three are hit or miss with service and quality of food though.

  • Shawarma King and Shawarma Palace – The King is closer, but of late I would say that the reliability makes the walk to the Palace worthwhile.  The constant line-up is a great indication that the garlic goodness is a little better at the Shawarma Palace.

  • Derringers - 5 blocks East on Rideau (actually at 99 Montreal St.  Rideau turns into Montreal at the bridge).  Tex Mex meets pub.  Great Fajitas.  The entire menu is safe to choose from.  Good value.

  • Bento Sushi – 606 Rideau St.  Right behind us.  There is really no ambiance and the sushi is only pretty good, but the price is reasonable (unless you are from the west coast.  If so, you have no idea how good you have it and you will think all of our sushi is terrible and overpriced…).  The close proximity makes this a good choice for a quick health meal choice.

  • Pub Italia – 434 Preston St.  This unique pub is a quirky mix of pub and monastery.  The “Beer Bible” contains about 200 options from around the world.  This pub is perhaps the most interesting place to eat in the city.  Unfortunately the food is only average, but the combination of amazing beer selection and funky décor make this a pub worth your time and money at least once.

  • Coconut Lagoon – 853 St-Laurent Blvd.  If you like Indian cuisine this place is worth the drive.  The southern style of food is fantastic.  The lunch buffet is cheaper on the weekdays, but still well worth the extra dollars on the weekend.  Try as I might, I have yet to achieve the goal of not over-eating when we go.

  • The Works – 580 Bank St. This is an Ottawa chain of 5 restaurants found around town.  Although I haven’t actually counted, there are probably 80 or so different types of burgers available.  Choose your bun, your type of protein, and then the daunting task of picking which one of the topping combinations you want; from blue cheese and pepper to peanut butter, the choice is yours.

  • Maru Sushi and Korean Restaurant – 319 Rideau St.  A café style Korean restaurant with reasonable prices.  As with everything else on the menu, the sushi is quite good, but not quite great.  This is the best value sushi we have found in Ottawa.
