Restaurants Near Avalon Bed and Breakfast

  • East African Restaurant  / Horn of Africa / Habesha – 364 / 376 / 574 Rideau st. All three restaurants serve interesting and spicy cuisine typically eaten by picking up food, with your hands, in a spongy bread called enjera.  The prices are reasonable and the experience is fun.  All three are hit or miss with service and quality of food though.

  • Shawarma King and Shawarma Palace – Both are west on Rideau. The King is closer, but of late I would say that the reliability makes the walk to the Palace worthwhile.  The constant line-up is a great indication that the garlic goodness is a little better at the Shawarma Palace.

  • Derringers - 5 blocks East on Rideau (actually at 99 Montreal St.  Rideau turns into Montreal at the bridge).  Tex Mex meets pub.  Great Fajitas.  The entire menu is safe to choose from.  Good value.

  • Bento Sushi – 606 Rideau st.  Right behind us.  There is really no ambiance and the sushi is only pretty good, but the price is reasonable (unless you are from the west coast.  If so, you have no idea how good you have it and you will think all of our sushi is terrible and overpriced…).  The close proximity makes this a good choice for a quick and healthy meal.

  • Spring Roll King – 508 Rideau St.  Although they have a really small seating area, this is a takeout restaurant.  We have been disappointed by some of the options, but the Thai is a safe bet.  The green curry quite tasty.

  • Fraser Café – 7 Springfield Rd.  Brunch is amazing.  Service is great.  The atmosphere is funky.  We haven’t tried lunch or supper yet, but I fully expect it to meet the high standards we've seen with every visit.

  • Maru Sushi and Korean Restaurant – 319 Rideau st.  A café style Korean restaurant with reasonable prices.  As with everything else on the menu, the sushi is quite good, but not quite great.  This is the best value sushi we have found in Ottawa.
